Subject: Urgent Advisory on HMPV Epidemic and Recommendations for Border Control
The Nigerian Society of Travel Medicine is deeply concerned about the recent outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and its potential to escalate into a larger public health crisis. As a society dedicated to the health and safety of travellers and the general public, we feel it is imperative to address this issue with urgency and clarity.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that poses significant risks, particularly to vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. The current rise in HMPV cases is alarming, and we must take proactive measures to mitigate its spread in Nigeria.
In view of the foregoing, we propose the following recommendations:
1. Control Measures at all Points of Entry: We ask that rigorous screening protocols are implemented at all points of entry. This includes temperature checks, health questionnaires to ascertain travel history and respiratory symptoms.
2. Public Awareness Campaigns: To help in early detection and reduce the risk of transmission, awareness programs targeted at the public on HMPV, its symptoms, and preventive measures should be carried out.
3. Collaboration with Health Authorities: We urge local and international health organizations to collaborate in monitoring and responding to the HMPV situation. Sharing data and best practices is crucial for managing this epidemic effectively.
4. Vaccination Research and Development: We call for increased investment in research to develop vaccines and treatments for HMPV. This will be vital in controlling future outbreaks and protecting public health.
5. Travel Advisories: Travelers should be advised to reconsider non-essential travel to areas with reported HMPV outbreaks. Those planning to travel should adhere to all health guidelines and take necessary precautions.
The Nigerian Society of Travel Medicine is committed to the health and safety of our citizens and travellers. We must act swiftly and decisively to prevent HMPV from becoming a pandemic threat. We encourage everyone to stay informed, follow health guidelines, and support one another during this challenging time.
